SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Thursday is the Fourth of July, and thousands will be attending the Star Spangled Springfield fireworks show Thursday evening.

It’s America’s birthday and who isn’t excited for some hamburgers and hot dogs and fireworks?

It’s important to know where to park and where to set up before the colorful show in the sky begins. Since 1991 the Spirit of Springfield has made July 4th one to remember. It’s a night of entertainment and family fun with a world-class fireworks display from the Memorial Bridge that can be seen for miles.

Tens of thousands are expected to come to celebrate America and see the show though and with many coming to Riverfront Park, Spirit of Springfield president Judy Matt tells 22News that it’ll save you stress to leave yourself some time, “Try to come at 6 or 7 o’clock. At 6 o’clock activities start for children and then at 7 o’clock we have some remarks and then Hip Town with Floyd Patterson is going to be playing from about 7:15 to just before the fireworks.”

After everyone gets to their spot here at Riverfront Park there will be a full night of activities, all leading up to 9:30 when the sun is down. The Fireworks will light up the sky over the Connecticut River as it has for over three decades now, and people will be enjoying the colorful sky from both sides of the river. In preparation for the big night, the city has issued a Travel Advisory for the fireworks display on July 3rd at 11 p.m. The Memorial Bridge will be closed to all traffic. On July 4th Exits 5A and 5B will close around 7 p.m. Streets in the area of Memorial Bridge will also be closed starting around 7:30 pm.

Once you’re able to get into downtown Springfield it’ll be important to find a parking spot for the night. There will be 10-dollar parking in the I-91 South Garage, the I-91 North Garage, Columbus Center, and Union Station. And if you come early enough, you can always find parking on the street or inside of the MGM parking garage.. just be ready to be patient when leaving.
It’ll be a busy night on the roads once the fireworks show ends.

Another reminder from the city that if you’re coming to Riverfront Park, alcohol, smoking, pets, bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, drones, and sparklers are not allowed.
