SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Thousands of utility customers in Hampden County lost power Thursday evening, with outages for some lingering into the morning hours Friday.

According to Springfield Fire Captain Drew Piemonte, the outages were in the Forest Park and Six Corners neighborhood.

At one point Thursday evening, around 3,400 people were without power, according to Eversource Spokesperson Priscilla Ress. The cause was due to two underground cable failures that began around 8:00 p.m. Our 22News crews could see multiple utility crews working at the “X” intersection overnight, which had been temporarily shut down to traffic. Power has since been restored in that area as of 6:00 a.m.

The excessive heat and steady demand for energy during the summer months can cause electrical overload to occur.

Meanwhile, there was also a significant outage in Monson overnight, which was also affecting some customers in neighboring Palmer and Brimfield. There were 2,300 customers without power at one point in the area, which is served by National Grid. According to their outage map , power has been fully restored.
