SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – For the 4th year, the Springfield Jazz & Roots Festival will feature a new addition to its already vibrant atmosphere.

Springfield’s 11th annual Jazz and Roots Festival begins

The festival attendees will have the opportunity to admire chalk sidewalk murals created by three local artists.

Aerosol artists grabbed their spray cans and brought to life six murals near Stearns Square and Tower Square Park. These murals were created through the Trust Transfer Project’s “Chalk for Change” initiative, which aims to inspire and uplift the community. Each one reflects the music and spirit of the festival and includes a positive message.

“It’s all positive messaging about mental health and community engagement. Feeling confident in yourself. And so the artists love to do it and we love the vision,” said Director of Common Wealth Murals, Britt Ruhe.

“All of us together, it’s amazing. Like like we’ve been hiding in tunnels for years, and now, like, our art and our expression is coming out,” added artist Nathan Miller.

On Saturday, artists will also be hosting engaged art projects and displays. Two will be doing a live painting while Common Wealth Murals hosts a community paint party from 2 PM to 5 PM.
