CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Schemes targeting seniors are on the rise again this summer.

Don’t believe everything you hear, says Milagros Johnson, the director of the Springfield mayor’s office of consumer information.

According to the Berkshire County District Attorney’s office, schemers are urging people they target to check downed trees outside their homes and as they walk outside to check, another schemer will enter their home, and steal their valuables.

“They’re most prevalent during the summer months why because trees are in full bloom storms like right now were possibly have one right so they call certain streets and if your number is listed they know who to call,” says Johnson.

Both state and local officials also said don’t hesitate–take action. “Talk to law enforcement especially if it’s a call or via email and you seem unsure,” says state senator Adam Gomez.

“The police will tell you they’ll know what’s going on in your area and you can accept that somebody coming to your door has the best intentions,” says Melvin Edwards, Vice President of Springfield City Council.

A reminder, the F.C.C. says not to respond to a caller asking for money or sensitive information like an account or social security number.
