SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – People in Springfield gathered Thursday night to honor Frederick Douglass and celebrate freedom.

The Pan African Historical Museum held a special event where they recited his Fourth of July speech.

People also gathered to put together a handmade acrylic piece of Douglass. Organizers say the event is a celebration of black history and culture.

Executive Director for the museum Sam Bradley says, “Frederick Douglass was a person who hated slavery he was a slave himself but he hated slavery he tried to do anything in his power to stop it.”

The museum also hosts an underground railroad tour. It takes place every third weekend of the month.
