    Chicopee driver arrested after allegedly swerving on Tapley Street in Springfield, firearm seized

    SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A firearm stolen from Vermont was recovered during a traffic stop on Tapley Street in Springfield.

    Suspect arrested in Agawam after striking police cruiser

    According to the Springfield Police Department, at around 3:40 a.m. on Friday officers observed a vehicle cross the double yellow line multiple times on Tapley Street. An inquiry check of the vehicle revealed it as uninsured and the registration was revoked.

    The officers conducted a traffic stop and informed the driver, 29-year-old Alexander Lopez of Chicopee, that the vehicle would need to be towed. During the inventory check of the vehicle, officers found a loaded large-capacity firearm with nine rounds of ammunition, capable of firing 13, and an opened container of ‘High Noon’ inside.

    Lopez refused to take a sobriety test and was arrested for the following charges.

    • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm
    • Possession of a High-Capacity Magazine/Feeding Device
    • Possession of Ammunition with an FID Card
    • Receiving Stolen Property less than $1200
    • Uninsured Motor Vehicle Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Registration
    • Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle
    • OUI- Liquor
