SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A deadly crash early Friday morning on I-291 in Springfield is currently under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police.

Suspect arrested in Agawam after striking police cruiser

According to police, shortly after 2:20 a.m., a Trooper from the State Police Springfield Barracks attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2013 Infiniti G37 on I-291 eastbound before Exit 4. The vehicle had been observed unable to maintain its lane, crossing over the lane markings.

Initially, the driver appeared to comply by pulling to the right and signaling to stop. However, the driver suddenly accelerated away, reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour.

As the vehicle continued, the driver attempted to exit I-291 via the Exit 4 ramp at a high speed. The Trooper did not pursue the vehicle onto the ramp and instead continued on I-291. The driver failed to negotiate the curve, causing the vehicle to crash and roll over. The operator, a 41-year-old man from Springfield, was unresponsive at the scene by paramedics. The chase, from the initial attempt to stop the vehicle to the crash site, spanned less than a mile.

No further information is available at this time. The incident is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police. This remains an ongoing investigation.
