SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – For the first time ever Massachusetts has legalized betting on Olympic events.

The Olympic flame is igniting interest worldwide and right here at our local sportsbooks.
Massachusetts is one of 38 states that have legalized sports betting in the Olympics.

The five Olympic rings are attracting sports bettors from near and far for the next two weeks during the Olympics. MGM Springfield’s Sportsbook has already seen its fair share of spectators placing bets on qualifying rounds leading up to the opening ceremony.

Vice President of Casino Operations Robert Westerfield told 22news that this is the first time that MGM Springfield is permitted to accept wagers on the Olympics but it does come with some restrictions.

“We’re expecting big crowds even just to view the games on our beautiful wall just to see the stuff on a big screen, but we’ve been getting pretty good action already so we’re anticipating it to be really busy,” said Westerfield.

When it comes to sports betting at the Olympics this year everything is fair game as long as it has a definitive outcome. The only events that you cannot bet on are events that rely on judging like boxing, gymnastics, and diving to name a few.

This year’s Olympics slate features 32 sports, including 4 non-traditional ones like skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, and breakdancing. And the process of betting on the Olympics is similar to betting on other sports. Plus, you can participate in person or from the comfort of your home.
