SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A Springfield man accused of threatening a driver with a gun in 2023 has pleaded guilty and will spend six years in prison.

According to online court documents, 25-year-old Tyrese Antuan Johnson entered a guilty plea on June 28 to three felony charges:

    • Unlawful use of a weapon
    • Armed criminal action
    • Forgery

Under a plea agreement, Johnson will serve six years for those charges.

A probable cause statement shows the Springfield Police Department (SPD) responded to a call in July 2023 where the victim reported that a blue Dodge Avenger was following them.

According to the probable cause statement, the victim’s girlfriend, mother and two brothers were passengers in the car when the Avenger pulled up beside them near Chestnut Expressway and National Avenue. A passenger in the backseat of the Avenger, later identified as Johnson, was yelling at them, but the victim said he couldn’t tell what was being said.

The Avenger continued to follow the victim as he drove, documents say, until Johnson leaned out of the window and pointed a gun at the victim.

Police later stopped the Avenger and spoke with the driver, who denied knowing about a gun or following the other car. Court documents said SPD officers found 9 mm ammunition and a handgun with an extended magazine containing 24 rounds.

The probable cause statement said when police interviewed Johnson, he said he hadn’t pointed a gun at anyone and refused to identify who the gun belonged to.
