SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — One of the prevailing stereotypes of Midwesterners is that they are very polite. But is that stereotype really true?

Best Betting Michigan conducted a study of 2,000 Midwesterners to figure out which cities and states are the most polite or least polite in the Midwest based on a series of questions related to polite actions one may or may not make for others.

The study saw the three biggest cities in Missouri — Springfield, St. Louis and Kansas City — all ranked within the top 10 of the rudest cities in the Midwest.

Springfield was ranked the 8th rudest city in the Midwest with a 4.97 rudeness score out of 10. Sandwiched between Springfield is Kansas City at 7th with a 5.15 rudeness score and St. Louis at 9th with a 4.76 rudeness score. The median score of all surveyed cities is 4.5.

Kansas City’s residents were also named to be the most likely to ignore or be rude to strangers at 30% compared to the average of 14%.

Topping the list of most rude cities is a pair of Indiana cities, with Evansville ranked as the rudest with a 5.82 rudeness score and Fort Wayne ranked as the second-rudest with a 5.71 rudeness score.

St. Paul, Minnesota was named the most polite city in the Midwest, posting the lowest rudeness core with 3.08, followed by Overland Park, Kansas and Naperville, Illinois.

The study also found that a majority of Midwestern residents do exhibit many polite stereotypes, like 74% of Midwesterners saying they find themselves apologizing when they’ve done nothing wrong, or that 64% of Midwesterners wave to people they do not know.
