Thursday, July 25: Summer heat holding back through the weekend

    By Tom Schmidt,

Today will be the warmest we’ve been in over a week… and we’ll still technically be below normal. This afternoon will feature high temperatures near 90° with light east winds and high humidity. A few stray showers are possible today with a couple of boundaries nearby, however most spots will stay dry.

Those planning to attend the opening day of the Ozark Empire Fair will be met with mild July conditions. Temperatures will be warm this evening in the low 80s to upper 70s. A downpour is unlikely but can’t be ruled out entirely.

A corridor of unsettled weather between the summer ridges will give birth to an organizing storm that will move through the region this weekend.

The storm will approach the area from the south on Friday. Look for increasing clouds by Friday afternoon with scattered showers and thunderstorms breaking out. Showers will fade Friday night, but a few will likely linger into Saturday morning. The core of the storm will move through Saturday. This will make for mainly cloudy skies and a good chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon. Lightning and locally heavy rainfall are possible, but the day doesn’t look like a complete washout.

This weak storm exits and we can expect warmer weather on the back end of the weekend. Hotter weather will follow as a summer ridge tries to set up shop over the Southern Plains next week.

The pattern that follows looks even hotter, a summer sizzler with lows in the 70s and highs well into the 90s each day. I can’t rule out rain in this pattern though with a risk for storms to spill around the ridge into the region.
