SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Road construction at National Avenue and Division Street will close multiple lanes starting Aug. 5.

According to a press release from the City of Springfield, one lane of traffic in each direction is expected to remain open for a large part of construction. However, work on the railroad crossing will require nearly full closure of the intersection for more than a month starting in September.

Construction is expected to last about six months and should be completed in early 2025.

The City of Springfield says the construction is intended to better integrate the existing railroad crossing, as well as add new traffic signals, pavement improvements, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant pedestrian facilities and new sidewalk and multi-use path connections.

“Improvements at this intersection have been in the works for several years,” said Zach Butcher, Public Works Project Manager, in a statement. “The layout of the intersection and use of scaffolding for the traffic signals can be confusing for motorists. The railroad crossing also adds in another layer of complexity. This project is going to create a more clear, cohesive and safe intersection for all users.”

Improvements at National and Division are estimated to cost $2.6 million and will be funded through a combination of the 1/4-cent Capital Improvement and 1/8-cent Transportation sales taxes, reimbursements from City Utilities for the cost of utility improvements, and a $750,000 Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission highway/rail crossing grant.
