Shortly after midnight Thursday, Springfield police were summoned to a home in the 2200 block of North Lyon Avenue after a 911 call stating a man tried to strangle his father.

The officers were initially able to talk to Michael Masterson, 62, of Springfield, at the home.

A few blocks away, officers located his son, Joshua Masterson, 36, of Des Moines, Iowa.

In a Friday news release, police said the son was taken to the hospital for medical treatment while the father stayed at the home.

The officers left the home at 12:43 a.m. and three minutes later, a 911 call came in stating the father was unresponsive at the home.

The father was taken to a Springfield hospital, where he died. The son, Joshua Masterson, was arrested and booked into the Greene County Jail.

The police said the case was presented to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office, and the son was charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held in jail without bail.

As of Friday afternoon, the state's online court system had not been updated with any additional details.

This is Springfield's eighth homicide investigation in 2024 and the 10th victim this year.
