Another week is behind us, and as we head into mid-September it is time to announce our newest Student of the Week.

This week the title goes to a senior at Springfield Public Schools' Study Alternative Education Center, Aaliyah Walski. Described as a great leader, Walski mentors younger students. She has also made the decision to complete extra credits in order to graduate in December. Her teachers highlight her positive attitude, leadership and ambition.

Student of the Week is an initiative by the News-Leader to highlight the academic achievements of local area high school students. Nominations for students who have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and community service are gathered from administrators at participating districts in the Ozarks.

Sophia Tsemra, Spokane High School: This senior has become an asset in her community as she speaks three languages, including Ukrainian and Russian, and can help the school's Ukrainian refugee students with translation. Sophia has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and participates in choir, where her ensemble received a 1.0 rating last spring. She is an active member of Future Business Leaders of America with plans to pursue an accounting degree upon graduation.
