Utica dropped a pitchers’ duel as Cambridge slid by the Association in a walk-off win 4-3 on Sunday, July 21, at Racetrack Park in Edgerton. Utica (10-2) is the regular season champion of the Home Talent League’s Southeast Section South Division. The Association has two more Sunday League games to play before the playoffs. SUNY AWARDS EXCELLENCE: In early May, SUNY Oneonta held its annual award ceremony on campus, where more than 50 students received an Academic Achievement Award. This award recognizes seniors who strive for excellence and maintain at least a 3.5 GPA within their major. Students are nominated by faculty members. The following area students were honored: Amber Genova of Cooperstown, Jacob Ghiorse and Graham Wooden of Oneonta, Raynella Clarke of Richfield Springs, and Jessica Dix of Mount Upton.
Major funders bet big on rural America and ‘everyday democracy’
Someone may need to tell Carlton Turner that he’s working to save democracy. Turner is co-director of the Mississippi Center for Cultural Production in the town of Utica, population 600, where his family has lived for eight generations. The organization, better known as Sipp Culture, is helping breathe life into a region that’s seen schools, grocery stores, and factories shutter or leave. A project in the works: transformation of one of Utica’s oldest buildings into a cultural center and commercial kitchen.
