Cooling station for unhoused people opens in Ilion
ILION — The Loaves and Fishes Warming Center offered people without housing a place to spend their nights this past winter. But just as shelter during cold weather is vital, so is having a place cool to get a break from summer’s heat and humidity. A new cooling station in Ilion, also operated by Loaves and Fishes, is offering just that.
Herkimer College announces 2024 Torchbearer Award recipients
HERKIMER — The Herkimer County Community College Board of Trustees recently selected four individuals to receive the 2024 Torchbearer Award. The honor is presented to individuals who have made substantial contributions to the college’s development and success, officials said, adding the awards have been presented every five years since 1999.

UTICA — The free Levitt AMP Utica Music Series continues with headliner act Larry & Joe at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 29, in Kopernik Park, 317 Genesee St. Larry hails from Venezuela and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe is from North Carolina and is a Grammy-nominated bluegrass musician who – after a decade in South America – got stranded back home in the pandemic.

UTICA, N.Y. -- District 5 champs Smith Post 24 are gearing up for tournament action. The team is set to take part in tournament action in Binghamton on Sunday and Monday. Their first matchup in pool play is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Macarthur Park against Clinton County Mariners Post 1619, based out of Plattsburgh, New York.
Cicero Man Arrested Near Utica on Heroin/Fentanyl Charges
A suburban man was arrested Thursday by agents from the TRI-county Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team, or TRIDENT. Twenty-nine-year-old Alexander Bryant of Cicero was taken into custody north of Utica. Agents say he'd delivered a mixture of heroin and fentanyl to undercover agents multiple times. TRIDENT says that on one occasion Bryant delivered 48 bags containing 31 grams of the drug mixture. On Thursday, he allegedly delivered agents 56 bags containing 35 grams of the mixture.
Utica man sentenced to 10+ years prison for drug and firearm possession
UTICA, N.Y. — A man in Utica was sentenced to 130 months of federal prison for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm. Carlos Pena Uceta, 24, admitted to having more than five kilograms of cocaine purchased from New York City and transporting it back to the Northern District of New York. Pena Uceta also admitted to owning a 9mm ghost gun in a suitcase in his apartment.

The life of the Proctor Memorial Building, located at Bagg Commemorative Park at the west end of Main Street in Utica, was never robust. Since its construction in 1933, it has seen periods of activity interspersed with many years of neglect. Other than volunteers, including the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) of Proctor High School, cleaning the park of debris and leaves, little attention was given to this location — the memorial to the birthplace of Utica.
