Utica University men’s hockey player Scoville named 2023-24 Empire 8 Man of the Year
UTICA, N.Y. — Brian Scoville, a three-year member of the Utica University men’s hockey team, was named the 2023-24 Empire 8 Conference’s Man of the Year. This award honors a senior male student-athlete who has distinguished himself throughout his collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service, and leadership.

Late last week, the New York Department of Transportation (DOT) shared scary footage of a near-miss accident that happened in a work zone in Otsego, New York. The summer is a popular time for road work across New York state. There are numerous major roads across the Hudson Valley that are currently under construction or undergoing maintenance resulting in work zones.

Patricia Bruschetti, 88, of Canajoharie, NY, passed away on July 23, 2024. The family will receive family and friends from 4:00 to 7:00 on Friday, July 26th, 2024, at Houghtaling and Hanley, 20 Otsego Street, Canajoharie, NY 13317. A funeral service will occur on Saturday, July 27th, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fort Plain Cemetery.
Major funders bet big on rural America and ‘everyday democracy’
Someone may need to tell Carlton Turner that he’s working to save democracy. Turner is co-director of the Mississippi Center for Cultural Production in the town of Utica, population 600, where his family has lived for eight generations. The organization, better known as Sipp Culture, is helping breathe life into a region that’s seen schools, grocery stores, and factories shutter or leave. A project in the works: transformation of one of Utica’s oldest buildings into a cultural center and commercial kitchen.

In Johnstown, longtime Johnstown resident Dr. Marietta Raneri has generously donated $25,000 to support the Johnstown Citizens’ Band. Her commitment to our organization will significantly enhance the band’s ability to continue bringing music and joy to the city of Johnstown and beyond. Dr. Raneri’s contribution will directly benefit our efforts in promoting music education, organizing community concerts, and maintaining our beloved band. The Johnstown Citizens’ Band was formed in 1908 and is in its 117th year of performing summer concerts on Friday nights. The 35 musicians are from the local area and present six concerts on the Charles Jenner Band Shell, built in memory of their former conductor. Queensbury’s Nick Logan will be leaving SUNY Cobleskill with school records and major accomplishments as well as an impressive academic record. The former Spartan will be attending the Indiana University of Pennsylvania to continue his athletic and academic career. The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new play-by-play broadcaster and he is a familiar face to many in Upstate New York. Utica has had several big names get their start in our little city. Tim Roye used to work for WIBX and is now the voice of the Golden State Warriors. Brendan Burke called games locally for the Utica Comets and is now the voice of the New York Islanders. He also occasionally calls games for the New York Yankees on WFAN radio. Jim Jackson used to be a sports guy for WIBX and now does the TV play-by-play for the Philadelphia Flyers.
