Sharing the word of the Bible in New York Mills
The New York Mills Bible Reading Marathon returned for its fifth year last week. The Bible Reading Marathon was held from July 14-20 at 12 West Gilman Street, adjacent to the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Dozens of readers took turns throughout the week to page through the Bible from start to finish. Among the people who took turns to read the Bible were Louise Amberg-Jokela and Bonnie Roediger (above).

State says NY Supreme Court judge must be removed after ‘racially offensive, profane’ display at party
A Central New York-elected Supreme Court Justice has been suspended and is facing removal due to her behavior at a high school graduation party in 2022. The New York Commission on Judicial Conduct has ruled that Justice Erin P. Gall, who serves in the Fifth Judicial District in Oneida County, should be removed from her position following an inappropriate interaction with police and civilians at a party. As a result, Gall has been suspended with pay.
Zitzelsberger The “King Of Swat”
RJ Zitzelsberger, pictured with brothers Palmer and Charlie, holds his trophy after winning the “King of Swat” competition in Cooperstown New York. Zitzelberger, a member of the Ohio Valley Xpress 12U summer league baseball team, took part in the event while in Cooperstown as part of a tournament in the town involving 86 teams.There were also four skills competitions which each included one member of every team, and RJ was picked for the 86-player field in the “King of Swat.” The 12-year old hit three home runs on five pitches in the first round. In the final round against a field whittled down to a dozen competitors, RJ hit five of 10 pitches over the fence. RJ is a soon-to-be seventh grader at the Linsly School in Wheeling.

William "Bill" Van Nort
William “Bill” Van Nort passed away peacefully on July 15th 2024 at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. Bill was born in Schuyler, New York on May 5th, 1939, the son of the late Margaret Farrell and Lester Van Nort. He graduated from Frankfort High School and proceeded to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, serving for four and a half years from 1958-1962. Bill went on to work at Remington Arms for forty-two and a half years until his retirement in 2014, living in Bridgewater, NY and later West Winfield, NY. He spent his final five years living at Millview Assisted Living Residence in Latham, NY.

Someone may need to tell Carlton Turner that he’s working to save democracy. Turner is co-director of the Mississippi Center for Cultural Production in the town of Utica, population 600, where his family has lived for eight generations. The organization, better known as Sipp Culture, is helping breathe life into a region that’s seen schools, grocery stores, and factories shutter or leave. A project in the works: transformation of one of Utica’s oldest buildings into a cultural center and commercial kitchen.
