Major funders bet big on rural America and ‘everyday democracy’
Someone may need to tell Carlton Turner that he’s working to save democracy. Turner is co-director of the Mississippi Center for Cultural Production in the town of Utica, population 600, where his family has lived for eight generations. The organization, better known as Sipp Culture, is helping breathe life into a region that’s seen schools, grocery stores, and factories shutter or leave. A project in the works: transformation of one of Utica’s oldest buildings into a cultural center and commercial kitchen.
William "Bill" Van Nort
William “Bill” Van Nort passed away peacefully on July 15th 2024 at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. Bill was born in Schuyler, New York on May 5th, 1939, the son of the late Margaret Farrell and Lester Van Nort. He graduated from Frankfort High School and proceeded to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, serving for four and a half years from 1958-1962. Bill went on to work at Remington Arms for forty-two and a half years until his retirement in 2014, living in Bridgewater, NY and later West Winfield, NY. He spent his final five years living at Millview Assisted Living Residence in Latham, NY.

Queensbury’s Nick Logan will be leaving SUNY Cobleskill with school records and major accomplishments as well as an impressive academic record. The former Spartan will be attending the Indiana University of Pennsylvania to continue his athletic and academic career. Former Utica Sportscaster Just Got Hired by an NFL Team
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new play-by-play broadcaster and he is a familiar face to many in Upstate New York. Utica has had several big names get their start in our little city. Tim Roye used to work for WIBX and is now the voice of the Golden State Warriors. Brendan Burke called games locally for the Utica Comets and is now the voice of the New York Islanders.
