Springfield leaders asking for federal help to handle migrant surge

Springfield city leaders want federal help dealing with an immigration surge.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11, S pringfield city leaders said it’s seen the city’s immigrant population jumped by 20,000 in about three years.

Tuesday night at the Springfield City Commission people were divided — but most wanted less violence and destruction around Springfield.

“Springfield is done, it is finished. And nothing you can say or do now can fix it,” Glenda Bailey said.

City leaders said they recognize Springfield’s immigration surge, and the strain it has put on resources.

“We need a police chief, we need a city commission and we’ve got to stand up and be bold,” Melissa Skinner said.

Mayor Rob Rue said the city needs federal funding so it can hire more resources. Everything from additional police officers to firefighters.
