There are big changes for this year’s Tax-Free Holiday in Ohio.

As we reported Tuesday on News Center 7′s Daybreak , Consumer Reporter Xavier Hershovitz broke down how those big changes can save you money.

The State Department of Taxation says any tangible personal property less than $500 is not taxed.

“It gives everybody a break. Especially people buying school supplies and everything,” Henry Leitschuch, a Springfield resident, said. “Saves alot of people money. It’s nice to have.”

Last year, the discount only applied to clothes that cost $75 or less and school supplies $20 or less.

This year, just about everything that can be touched, moved or consumed costing up to $500 is tax free.

Even things like pet supplies are tax-free. Hershovitz purchased dog food this morning and got it without tax.

“I needed to get cat litter and I’m glad I got it now,” Alexia Page-Boyd, of Springfield, said.

Page-Boyd was picking up things she needed for the week and was surprised to learn she paid no sales tax on anything.

“To be able to have everything, including things that I didn’t think would cover it, is really awesome,” Page-Boyd said.

Restaurants are also included this year. Things not included are vehicle sales, cigarettes, alcohol, car repairs, or alterations.

“I need some new hiking boots. So might as well use it here or at Walmart or anywhere to kind of get some extra higher ticket items,” Page-Boyd said.

Shoppers will not have to pay sales tax on certain items now until 11:59 p.m. Aug. 8.
