    Springfield football's impact players

Berger is a four-year starter for the Spartans. He will quarterback a Springfield offense looking to make a lot of changes this fall. … "He’s going to be playing a big role," said Tanksley. "He will be the workhorse, even as we run the ball more." …  Herndon is a three-year starter, but will switch from guard to fullback this fall. The two-way, three-year starter will also anchor Springfield's defensive line. … "He's gotten a lot faster and stronger," Tanksley said. "He's really bought in." … Braswell returns as Springfield's main running back after claiming the spot last season.

What’s new for Springfield football in 2024

Tanksley has renovated the team's offseason program and is seeing dividends already. … "Our lifting is really good right now," he said. "We’re seeing growth at a huge rate. Compared to two years ago, it's great to see how much the guys have bought in." … On offense, the Spartans plan to be more run-oriented this season. Tanksley said Springfield should have a lot more depth in terms of running ability. … "We are going to be running the ball a ton," he said. "We have nice plan in place. We have some seniors who have stepped up."

    Springfield football's outlook

Job one for the Spartans is ending a 26-game losing streak. … "I think our kids are working themselves into some wins this year," Tanksley said. "They’re doing everything right. The kids are hungry. I hate to lose more than I like to win." … Tanksley said the adversity his team went through last year, including the death of coach John Tanksley, his father, will aid his team this season. … "We fought through a lot of hurdles last year, on and off the field," he said. "These kids have overcome a ton. They’re ready to take the next step and turn everything thing around. They can be the class that stops the stigma of Springfield football."
