SPRINGFIELD, NJ -- Two of Springfield's travel baseball teams, the 10U and 12U Minutemen, have reached the championship games in their respective playoff tournaments.
After finishing the regular season at 6-4, the fifth-seeded Springfield Minutemen 12U team picked up their first round playoff win against Somerville. Down 7-3 in the last inning, the Minutemen put five unanswered runs on the board including Charlie Gamarekian with a two-run single and the go-ahead run on a steal of home by Bobby Evans. Minutemen collected 18 hits in the game, including three each by Alex Shue and Gavin Rodriguez, and two hits apiece by Joe Sarris, Landon Rinaldi and Evans.
In Wednesday’s semifinal game, the Minutemen took down the top-seeded, previously undefeated Cranford Gold team (11-1) in a back-and-forth game that broke open in the sixth inning on a towering home run by Gavin Rodriguez that coach Joe Sarris said “would’ve cleared the fence at Yankee Stadium!” The final score was 9-6, with multiple hits collected by Landron Rinaldi, Devin Gonzalez, Charlie Gamarkeian and Bobby Evans.
The 12U team advances to play at the third-seeded Chester-Mendham Patriots this week.
The 10U Minutemen Host Championship Game at Roessner Field on Monday night
The third-seeded 10U Minutemen will host the fourth-seeded Clark Renegades at Roessner Field on Monday, July 22 at 7 p.m. The Minutemen defeated Randolph and Colonia on Friday to advance to the championship game.
In the opening round on July 11, the 10U Minutemen entered the third inning down 5-3 to Randolph before exploding for 8 runs that put them over the top for good. The offense was powered by Mike DeMaio who went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBI, Hudson Wormuth who went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple, and Kyle Fitzgerald and Lucas Praizner who each picked up two hits apiece. On the mound, Hudson Wormuth pitched three innings, struck out five batters, and was closed out by Kyle Fitzgerald, as well as Dante Catania who pitched one inning with two strikeouts to win the game. The Minutemen held on for a 14-7 victory.
On Friday night against Colonia, Kyle Fitzgerald led the Minutemen on the mound, going four innings, striking out five and allowing one earned run. The Minutemen got on the board early with a four-run first inning out of the gate, which proved to be decisive in the 5-3 victory. The scrappy offense picked up seven hits - with Sammy Gamarekian going 2 for 3 with one RBI. Other RBIs were delivered by Billy Hildebrand, Mike DeMaio, Paul Santangelo and Nick D’Egidio.
