High heat brings storm chances
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The heat is expected to intensify quickly where highs could reach the low 90s. Highs are still on target for the low to mid-90s for areas along and south of U.S. Highway 20. To the north, the potential for clouds and any residual showers could limit things into the mid to upper 80s. For those communities that make the 90s again, heat index readings of 100 to 110 look likely again today.

Severe Weather is a Possibility on Thursday
(Des Moines) The National Weather Service says there is a risk of severe weather tomorrow afternoon in portions of west-central, northwest, and north-central Iowa. Forecasters say a cold front will enter and move through the state Thursday into Thursday night. While there may be a few showers and storms ahead of this front, a more widespread line of thunderstorms may develop along the front later in the afternoon into the night. These storms along the front may be severe, with damaging wind gusts and large hail, the primary hazards in the afternoon into the evening, with storm intensity waning late in the evening.

Lawmaker pushes for audit of Iowa Veterans Home
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — An Iowa lawmaker is calling for a state audit of the Iowa Veterans Home in response to controversial job cuts this summer. Rep. Sue Cahill, a Democrat from Marshalltown, sent a letter to the state auditor Tuesday. She says the home cut 11 positions and reduced four other positions to part-time without input from the state Legislature.
Iowa Woman Pleads Not Guilty To Aggravated Grand Theft Charges In Department Of Social Services Theft Case
PIERRE, (KCCR) — An Iowa woman facing two charges in South Dakota has pleaded not guilty in a Hughes County courtroom to those charges. Sixty-eight year-old Lonna Carroll was arraigned on two felony counts of Aggravated Grand Theft Tuesday morning in Pierre. The South Dakota Attorney General’s office is accusing Carrol with stealing one-point-eight million dollars in state and federal funds intended for South Dakota’s Child Protective Services program between 2010 and 2023. Attorney General Marty Jackley says Carroll had control of the funds she’s accused of stealing as an employee of the Department of Social Services and resident of Pierre during the alleged time the money was being taken. A trial date for Carroll has been set for December 4th of this year. Carroll is facing the possibility of 35 years in prison if convicted and 80-thousand dollars in fines. Carroll remains in the Hughes County Jail, being held on a 50-thousand dollars cash or surety bond.

Iowa joined 11 other states in an effort to combat human trafficking. The operation, Coast to Coast, identifies victims and provides them with resources and arrests human traffickers.
