Miranda Lambert's "Selfie" Fit Takes Internet By Storm

Over the weekend, Miranda Lambert scolded concertgoers who took a selfie during her Las Vegas residency, and the video has gone viral. 

After she called out the girls taking a selfie, some of the audience were so put off by her comments that they walked out, as seen and heard saying in the video, “You don’t treat your fans that way.” 

Various users on Twitter sided with the girls, saying that they were having fun and that her reaction was rude and uncalled for, considering they had paid for the show. 

Many others sided with Lambert, claiming that people are obsessed with technology and should be present watching the concert, ultimately leaving the internet divided on who was wrong. 

The impact of using phones during concerts has been a topic of hot debate over the last few years. 

Some artists embrace being constantly filmed during their performances, such as Taylor Swift, who often engages with the fans who record during her show.

Yet many other artists have either spoken out regarding the impact of technology on the concert experience as a whole or requested that certain songs be “phone free.” 

For example, Chris Martin (Coldplay) requested that all fans put their phones away for a second go around singing “A sky full of stars.” Of course, not everyone followed the rule, but most audience members chose to be fully in the moment. 

Several artists, such as Bob Dylan and Jack White, have had concerts where they didn’t allow any phones. Whether or not there should be a phone ban at these events continues to be argued, but the bottom line is that most artists likely won’t implement such a strict rule due to the potential consequences. 

Miranda’s outrage wasn’t necessarily unwarranted; frustration can build up and boil over. Also, as all too often, the singer's personal life was pulled into the situation, with some Twitter users claiming her divorce from Blake Sheldon was now “warranted.” 

Although her anger may have been warranted, it was ultimately unfounded because phones were allowed, and no rules were stated. The women were caught entirely off guard, simply taking a photo together. They did what many of us do all the time at concerts and were humiliated by a woman and artist they deeply admired.
