The NFC West features the San Francisco 49ers, the reigning NFC champions, and some of the most bitter rivalries in the NFL. From Richard Sherman and Michael Crabtree's infamous beef to the "Hail Murray" and the 49ers' offensive dominance over the last few years, the NFC West features some of the best team moments of recent years. But of these great teams, which boasts the best running back room heading into the 2024 season?

    4) Arizona Cardinals

Despite James Conner being a more than consistently solid option and rookie Trey Benson out of Florida State on the roster, the Arizona Cardinals end up last in the rankings. This, unfortunately, has less to do with the talent of the room but more with the average nature of the pairing compared to an outstanding group of rooms throughout the division. Regardless of the ranking, Conner was great for the Cardinals last year, with 1,205 yards total and nine touchdowns. With the combination of Conner and Benson leading the way, Arizona could surprise a few teams this year.

    3) Los Angeles Rams

Kyren Williams took over the backfield as a second-year back and thrived for Los Angeles last year. Despite only playing in 12 games, Williams totaled 1,350 yards and 15 touchdowns. Williams became a fantasy football sensation, a league winner for many nationwide. Cut to this offseason, where you add notorious Giants killer Boston Scott from Philadelphia during free agency and rookie Blake Corum from Michigan during the draft. While Williams will likely shine again for LA, adding depth behind him helps keep the Rams a threat in the NFC West.

    2) Seattle Seahawks

While it may be controversial to have the Seahawks above the Rams regarding running back rooms, Seattle is a sleeper. The Seahawks feature a duo of third-year running back Kenneth Walker and second-year back Zach Charbbonet from UCLA. The pair gained 1,367 on the ground with ten total touchdowns. Walker and Charbbonet also contributed through the air, gaining 468 receiving yards. This duo is young and prepared to strike. Under new head coach Mike Macdonald, Walker and Charbbonet are likely to share the backfield again and show flashes of being one of the best young duos in the NFL.

    1) San Francisco 49ers

Despite rooms, San Francisco has the best running back in the NFL. Elijah Mitchell is solid and has shown potential flashes of being a starting-caliber running back. Still, Christian McCaffrey is at a different level of talent from the rest of the league. McCaffrey totaled 2,023 yards last year and 21 touchdowns. He is the main catalyst for the incredible success of Kyle Shanahan's offense and why the 49ers managed to make it to the Super Bowl last season. As long as McCaffrey is a 49er, the 49ers stay in the one slot.
