New Communication Tech Revolutionizes College Football Strategy

For the upcoming 2024 season, college football teams will benefit from cutting-edge communication technologies, including in-helmet headsets, wristbands, belt screens, and tablets. The NCAA has approved the use of these new tools, which promise to enhance communication between players and staff, making interactions more efficient and effective.

While the NFL has long utilized such technologies, the NCAA has now recognized their importance in college football. Companies like Go Rout and Armilla have collaborated with teams including Auburn, Liberty, Washington, and Wake Forest to integrate these innovations.

Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell praised the new system, saying, “Our defensive scout team uses it a lot and we love it. As soon as a play’s over, they can quickly review it. It’s allowed us to increase both the quality and quantity of reps. Our offensive players have noted how much more practice we get because of it. I like that players don’t have to return to the huddle.”

The new system allows coaches to upload game plans to software and send them to players’ screens—about the size of a business card—via tablets. The system displays play calls or diagrams and switches off 15 seconds before the play clock expires to allow for communication during plays.

With wristwatches and belt tablets, players on the field can now see the play being executed without distractions from fans or other players. The wristwatches are similar to Apple Watches, and the belt tablets hang from the player’s belt for easy viewing.

The recent Michigan sign-stealing scandal has underscored the need for such technology. Direct communication between coaches and players reduces the risk of play or strategy theft, as emphasized by Kansas co-offensive coordinator Jim Zebrowski: “It's hard to steal signs when you're talking directly to the players. That was a big advantage, helping keep them calm.”

Concerns remain about potential signal theft or hacking into systems. The Michigan scandal involved an individual disguised on an opposing team’s sideline, highlighting that while technology can mitigate some issues, vigilance is still necessary to prevent future breaches.

The integration of advanced communication technology in college football marks a significant advancement in strategy, training, and performance. By improving real-time data exchange and coordination, these innovations are set to transform game-day operations and tactical approaches.
