Roman Reigns is one of WWE's top stars in WWE. He is also referred to as the locker room leader by many of his peers. However, there was one former WWE superstar who was not a fan of Roman at all. The person was kept away from Roman due to the tension. That superstar's name was Matt Riddle
Former WWE show host Matt Camp has shared some stories about his time working for the company and he revealed the tension between Roman and Riddle. He was quoted saying the below.
“Riddle was the in-studio guest, and we 100% did not put Riddle on the set until Roman was gone, off the video screen. Just not gonna mess with that.
And then Riddle went and said something dumb about Roman right after that in another interview, like right after that. And I think that’s when he told the story about writing a letter to Roman apologizing and Randy Orton told him to do it.
But we made a point to keep Riddle (away from Roman)… because we would have those interactions, where someone would be in-studio and interact with the (video) guests whether they were in a storyline or not – we had some fun stuff with that.
We 100% kept Riddle off the set until the Roman interview was done, which was the right call.”
That is super telling that both men can't be in the same room together due to their tensions. It's not the first time WWE had to do that as Riddle had a ton of issues with Brock Lesnar, Goldberg, Seth Rollins, and many more. Riddle doesn't have a great reputation with others, but with Roman it was bad.
A key thing Camp mentioned is that Riddle was forced by Randy Orton to write an apology letter to Reigns. That is how bad there tension was that Riddle was annoying to the point Roman didn't want to see him. Riddle needed to write an apology on paper and originally didn't want to do it. He was forced to by Orton, which showed even though Orton trying to help him, Riddle ignored it.
That's what happens when a person goes on an interview and publicly bashes the man by calling him a "non-needle-mover" and saying that he could beat him if it was a legit fight. He was quoted below saying the following.
No disrespect to Roman, he seems like a swell fella, but at the same time, it's like when people say they're a good parent. You know what? If you were a good parent, your kids would be telling you you're a good parent. When he's saying 'Acknowledge me' or 'I move the needle,' no, you don't. You're related to The Rock. Shut up. Like, I'm not impressed, I can beat you up in a real fight. So, shut your mouth.
"You're not moving needles. I'm the real stallion, RK-Bro is moving the merch, we're moving the needle, and that's it. I don't want to say too much, I'm not trying to get in trouble. Hey, hats off to him. He's amazing at what he does. I do like what he does, but at the same time, it's like, get off your high horse. You're in that spot for a reason. You're not a bro. You're the second generation. I'm first generation."
Reading those comments, it's a miracle that they managed to work together in 2022 and not have a shot fight with each other. The only other time Reigns got into a type of beef like this was with Enzo Amore when he kicked him out of the locker room.
A few months after these series of events, drug suspensions, and the whole airport saga, it was just too much baggage. WWE released Matt Riddle from their roster and has been in the independent, MLW, and NJPW.
This whole saga is just another example as to why Matt Riddle is another case of wasted potential. It's also telling that AEW does not want any part of Riddle at all. They could have easily signed him, but haven't due to all of his problems. He's got nobody to blame, but himself for this and it's a real shame. Hopefully, Riddle gets the help he needs and fixes his problems because he is a really good worker.
