STAMFORD, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – The Stamford Carnegie Library, originally built in 1910, has been a vital part of the Stamford community for more than 114 years, serving its residents in numerous ways. However, the library’s services are now exceeding the capacity of the current building, necessitating the need for a larger space.

The building still stands and hasn’t changed much in the last couple of years. Ann Pippin, the library director, has been repurposing the building for the community.

“They’re turning into less about books and more about community. That’s how libraries are staying involved. Because books are digital now, libraries need to change and be current and become more community-based,” Pippin said. “We do have laundry, soap, diapers, baby wipes. If someone needs it, come in and get it.”

With new programs implemented, Pippin mentioned that the community’s response has been great. Now, a bigger and nicer space is needed.

“Right now, with this just being only in the basement and only operating out of the basement where we’re growing out a room. I mean, right now I have 70 people downstairs for the zoo, and there’s not enough space for everybody,” Pippin told KTAB/KRBC.

Pippin has already planned for the new $9.5 million renovation project, hoping to have a bigger space and help the community more.

“The inside is going to be completely gutted and brand new. Our basement is going to be a children’s area. Our main floor is going to be young adult and adult fiction and nonfiction, and then we’ll have an event center where we can have about 50 to 70 people at one time,” Pippin explained.

Pippen started fundraising three weeks ago and has raised almost $20,000. To donate, you can mail a check to 600 East McHarg Stamford, TX, 79553, or donate online .
