STAMFORD, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) — For nearly three decades, Stamford resident Elida Gonzales has been happy in her home on Hamilton Street, surrounded by the memories of a life well lived. However, a large fire on the night of the 4th of July turned her beloved home into ashes. The fire was so large that it also burned an abandoned home next door. Sophie Gonzales, Elida’s daughter, thanks the first responders for putting out the flames.

“The police officer had to come in there and get her out. I also want to say thank you to him. He saved my mom. There are just not enough words to say thank you to the police officer. My mom had a lot of old photos of us and, of course, my dad and her. There are a lot of sentimental photos that are gone now,” explained Gonzales.

Elida’s grandson, Aaron Gonzales, is heartbroken to lose a house that holds many memories. Although it’s a long road ahead, it is not one they will walk alone. Days after the fire, residents donated clothes and other essential items.

“It’s just sad to see a house that my grandma and I would sit on that poor porch swing and talk and talk for hours on end and just to see that it’s all gone now,” said Aaron.

Many of the losses can never be replaced, but the Gonzales family shared that with the help of family and community support, they are ready to move on.

“I know my mom was actually surprised that people have been trying to reach out and help her. My mom is a strong lady, and with God’s help, we are going to get through this. We are going to help her get through this,” added Gonzales.

The Gonzales family set up a fire fund at First Bank Texas under the name Elida Gonzales for those interested in donating. Drop-off donations are being accepted at 514 East Moran Street in Stamford. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
