Val Whiting was on a pair of national championship winning basketball teams during her time at Stanford. In doing that, Whiting left quite an impression on someone — as she found on on Saturday.

Whiting, who was on Stanford’s championship-winning teams in 1990 and 1992, shared a story on X (formerly Twitter) about being approached by a person asking about her college days.

“So I was sitting outside at a table of my fave natural grocery store @PCC and this guy pulls up and says, ‘Excuse me ma’am, did you win a national championship at Stanford.’ I’m thinking it’s a friend playing a joke on me. So I look closer especially since I don’t have my glasses on. But I don’t know this guy. So I say, ‘Yes. Yes I did.’ The two teen boys in the back look at each other and yell out in disbelief. The man then looks back at them and says, ‘See I told you so. Now you owe me $20.’ That made my day. It’s nice to be remembered.”

While her achievements at Stanford came more than three decades ago, there’s good reason to remember Whiting.

Among her many achievements in college, Whiting was the Pac-10 (as it was then known) and National Freshman of the Year in 1990. She was also on the 1992 All-Final Four Team and was an All-American in both 1992 and 1993.
