The word on the street is sales. The Iowa City Downtown District's annual Sidewalk Sales is back for the 56th consecutive year from Thursday, July 18 to Sunday, July 21. Local retailers both downtown and in the Northside neighborhood flock to the sidewalks with tables and tents, selling merchandise at a steep discount.

Crawford County Memorial Hospital Contributed Over $60 Million To State’s Economy
A study conducted by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) found that Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison has contributed over $60 million to Iowa’s economy in 2023. Iowa hospitals throughout the state invested $21.3 billion, and Crawford County Memorial Hospital made up $63.7 million. Over $30 million stayed in the local community as wages and benefits from employment, $34.4 million to be more precise. The hospital supported 559.2 job opportunities, which makes up 8.5% of all individuals employed throughout Crawford County, are at the hospital. Crawford County Memorial Hospital is also a huge supporter of Denison and surrounding communities, with $2.6 million allocated for charity care to provide necessary health services to individuals who cannot afford it, serving 4.4 thousand individuals through this program. New Pedestrian Law in Iowa City: What You Need to Know About Crosswalk Safety
A new law in Iowa City is shaking up the rules of the road by expanding the definition of “pedestrian.” This narrow definition meant that drivers were only required to yield to people walking, leaving bicyclists, wheelchair users, and other vulnerable road users (VRUs) without legal protection in crosswalks. Under this updated legislation, the term now covers everyone from bike riders and wheelchair users to people pushing strollers, skating, or scootering. In other words, if you’re in a crosswalk, drivers have to yield to you—no exceptions.

Magalhaes brings innovation, science to Iowa Pork Industry Center
Some people love to work with numbers and data, and some people love to work with people. Edison Magalhaes counts both among his skills and looks forward to sharing his excitement with colleagues and pork producers in Iowa. As the first-ever innovative swine systems faculty member in Iowa State University's animal science department, he began the position July 1 and is housed in the Iowa Pork Industry Center there. Already he's working to develop a program that will capitalize on his strengths and the needs of people in the industry.
