Michigan man sentenced to life in prison for death of 2-year-old Wynter Cole-Smith
(CBS DETROIT) - Rashad Trice, the man charged in connection with the death of 2-year-old Wynter Cole-Smith last year, was sentenced to life in prison, the Michigan Attorney's General's office announced on Friday.Trice pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and first-degree criminal sexual conduct in July 2024. He initially faced 20 charges after the state consolidated the charges filed in multiple counties.In a federal case, he pleaded guilty to kidnapping resulting in death."Nothing can bring Wynter back, but I hope knowing that Mr. Trice will spend the rest of his life behind bars, without the need for a lengthy trial, offers some solace to her loved ones," Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. "Thanks to the tireless work of law enforcement and prosecutors in my office, the man responsible for these horrific acts will never again endanger our communities." Trice was accused of kidnapping Wynter on July 2, 2023, in Lansing after assaulting her mother. He was arrested in the early morning hours of July 3 in St. Clair Shores; however, the child was not with him at the time of the arrest. Wynter's body was found on July 5 near the Coleman A. Young International Airport in Detroit.

Biden awards $50 million to support EV manufacturing in 6 states
(CBS DETROIT) — The Biden administration announced that $50 million will be awarded to six states with significant automotive communities to help convert manufacturing facilities to support the electric vehicle supply chain. The funding is made possible through the administration's Investing in America plan. It builds on the $1.7 billion awarded to 11 "shuttered or at risk" facilities in several states to bolster electric vehicle production. Michigan is one of the recipients and will get $18,406,420.45. The other states that will receive funding include: Ohio: $9,373,236.32 Indiana: $8,770,249.81 Kentucky: $4,876,458.57 Tennessee: $4,513,688.68 Illinois: $4,059,946.17 The allocations were determined after an April request for information on how small- and medium-sized...

A popular winery and vineyard in Southwest Michigan is under new ownership and its owner is someone whose music you've likely heard on the radio. After a concert performance in Grand Rapids, OneRepublic's Zach Filkins visited some nearby wineries and decided that it was time to buy one. “Dredging (on Lake Shamrock) is continuing with good progress,” Clare City Manager Jeremy Howard told the Commission at the August 5th City meeting. He said, “Our mechanical dredge has ben undergoing some repairs from normal wear and tear on the equipment, but should be back up and running hopefully the first full week in August to continue working to the north of the beach at Shamrock Park,” adding, Savin is operating both dredges 24 hours a day, five days (Monday-Friday,) but has also experienced some intermittent mechanical issues that have been resolved.”
