Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program application date extended
In January Governor Josh Shapiro announced the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program, or PTRR for short. With the program, hundreds of thousands of older and disabled Pennsylvanians will now be eligible for a rebate up to $1,000. This brings the maximum standard rebate up from its previous level of $650. Leechburg Area officials plan lawsuit against Westmoreland County over tax assessments
Leechburg Area School Board members say they intend to file a lawsuit against Westmoreland County and possibly one against the Pennsylvania Department of Education. SOUTH PARK, Pa. (KDKA) -- One person was severely injured at a federal research center in South Park Township on Friday.The incident happened just before 1 p.m. behind security gates at the federal facility off Cochran Mill Road. Allegheny County officials said the person had severe arm and facial injuries. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said an outside vendor was loading hazardous waste material into a truck for disposal and was injured. A 5-gallon, off-gassing presumably exploded while being loaded into a truck. There are no concerns regarding the potential release of hazardous materials and there isn't a threat to the facility's staff, the CDC said. The county confirmed a hazmat coordinator was on scene to help and the Broughton Fire Company is leading the investigation locally. No information has been released on the outside vendor who was injured. According to the CDC's website, the Bruceton Research Center has two National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health divisions that work there. It's also home to an office of the Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory.

The Japanese House Comes to the Roxian; Historics at Pitt Race (Sun., 7/28/24)
British indie-pop musician Amber Bain brings her acclaimed project, The Japanese House, to the Roxian Theatre this evening for a concert. She plays plays guitar, synthesizer and keyboard; as well as singing. Just off touring with Maggie Rogers, Bain has recently released her country-influenced single “:)” aka Smiley Face. The moniker “The Japanese House” was inspired by a stay at a cottage in Cornwall, England, that she and her family had vacationed at for a week during her childhood. The property had been previously owned by Kate Winslet and was furnished in a Japanese style. Her latest EP is ITEIAD Sessions (In the End it Always Does) contains live versions of songs from her second album In the End It Always Does. It was released in 2023. The record “highlights heartbreak and love lost, emotional reflections on childhood trauma and identity, and the album finds the artist embracing her pop side like never before with help from Matty Healy and George Daniel (The 1975), Katie Gavin (MUNA), Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Charli XCX among others.” Special guest is Allison Ponthier. 7 p.m. 425 Chartiers Ave., McKees Rocks.

Downtown Pittsburgh sushi restaurant hit with consumer alert
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A sushi restaurant in Downtown Pittsburgh was hit with a consumer alert after an inspection. The Allegheny County Health Department issued the consumer alert for No. 1 Sushi Sushi following an inspection on Thursday. According to the inspection report, there were multiple malfunctioning coolers. "There is not sufficient refrigeration capacity to operate safely," the report said. The inspector said packaged salmon, white fish and romaine lettuce had to be thrown away because they weren't being held at low enough temperatures. The report also notes that there are ten seats for customers, but there are no public bathrooms.The violations involving food holding temperatures are considered medium risk, meaning they're hazards that may add to the risk of food-borne illness or injury.The health department issues a consumer alert when a food facility is out of compliance with minimum food safety standards, potentially posing a risk to public health. When the consumer alert is removed, the health department's website will be updated.
USDA Launches Rabies Vaccination Program for Wildlife in Pittsburgh
The USDA will partner with state officials to drop oral rabies vaccine baits by helicopter in the Pittsburgh area from August 6-24. The effort aims to vaccinate raccoons and curb rabies spread, with helicopters flying from Beaver County Airport.
