City of Wilmington postpones Chestnut Street building demolition bidding process

The demolition bidding process for the city of Wilmington's office building at 305 Chestnut St. has been postponed until further notice.

The city posted an addendum on its website Wednesday notifying holders of bid documents of the decision.

The city had previously posted an advertisement for bids on May 14 to accept applications for the building's demolition. Jerod Patterson, the city's communications director, said the city is evaluating specifications of the request for proposal.

He said the city is not definitely demolishing the building, but looking at how to make best use of the land with cost as a priority.

The building was built in 1959 and is the city's largest office building, according to the city's website, and it would require $4.2 million in maintenance and repairs over the next five years.

The city is in the process of transitioning offices to its new headquarters, the former PPD building. As a result, the city intends to sell several of its vacated buildings and surplus property to offset the $68 million purchase price of the new campus.

According to the city's website, the historic Thalian Hall/City Hall building would not be sold.
