Week 1 Wilmington-area football roundup: Who won Friday night?

After much anticipation, the 2024 high school football season officially kicked off Friday.

Six area teams started the season with victories, including one which scored 74 points.

Here's the breakdown of each Wilmington-area football team's Week 1 performance.

Pender 74, Lejeune 7 : The Patriots steamrolled their way to another massive victory in Week 1.

Ashley 34, Athens Drive 16: Ashley starts the season 1-0 for the second straight season.

New Hanover 13, J.H. Rose 7: Jacob Monroe's two touchdown passes helped the Wildcats get past the Rampants at home.

Laney 21, D.H. Conley 17: Laney's Ellis Williams' two touchdown runs pushed the Bucs to a Week 1 victory.

Cleveland 35, Hoggard 32 : In the area's best matchup of Week 1, Cleveland quarterback Jackson Byrd tossed four touchdowns as the Rams squeaked by Hoggard.
