Will any of these Wilmington-shot TV shows get spinoffs or reboots?

When a TV series becomes a success, it often spawns talk of some sort of spinoff, reboot or cast reunion.

Whether any of those things actually happen depends on many factors, among them money, interest from networks and/or streamers and, often, whether the actors in the original series are willing participants.

But when it comes to popular TV shows shot in Wilmington, only one has gotten a true spinoff and/or reboot, maybe two if you hedge the definition (although "Zoey 102," the Paramount+ film sequel to the mid-2000s Nickelodeon sitcom "Zoey 101," did shoot in Wilmington in 2023 ).

But there will be more, maybe several more. Let's take a look at the possibilities.

    'Matlock'

The final three seasons (out of nine) of this wildly popular TV legal drama/comedy starring Andy Griffith as wily lawyer Ben Matlock shot in Wilmington in 1993 and 1994 . But it's taken 30 years for a new "Matlock" to emerge, which it will on CBS Oct. 17, after a special preview Sept. 22, with Kathy Bates playing lawyer Madeline "Matty" Matlock.

The new "Matlock" will also stream on Paramount+. According to a trailer for the show, Matty is no relation to Ben, but the original "Matlock" exists in the reboot as an old TV show.

The show's creators have said the new series was written in part to combat ageism . In a teaser, Bates as 76-year-old Matty says that being "invisible (is) useful, because nobody sees us coming."

    Chances: 100 percent.

    'Dawson's Creek'

This Wilmington-shot teen drama celebrated the 25th anniversary of its first episode, and the 20th anniversary of its last one, in 2023 . It's been the subject of reboot talk for many years, but the chances of that happening aren't good. (There was a short-lived spinoff called "Young Americans," but it didn't involve any of the show's four main stars.)

Katie Holmes has been a hard no for years, as has James Van Der Beek. Joshua Jackson told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show a few years ago that a reunion "might be a little bit shocking" for fans. And spoiler alert here, but Michelle Williams' character dies at the end of the show.

    Chances: Slim to none.

    'One Tree Hill'

Actors in the long-running, Wilmington-shot show "One Tree Hill" have been open to the idea of rebooting and/or revisiting their teen/young adult drama over the years.

    Now it'll likely become reality.

Netflix is developing a sequel to the popular Wilmington-shot drama "One Tree Hill," according to a story from entertainment industry publication Variety .

According to the story, "original series stars Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Danneel Ackles are executive producing the reboot," with Bush and Burton set to reprise their roles and "Ackles also in talks to return."

More: Popular Wilmington-shot TV drama 'One Tree Hill' may be getting a Netflix reboot

In May, actor Chad Michael Murray told The Today Show that a reboot is "needed," echoing comments he made to People magazine in 2022, when Murray said, "there's so many issues today that society faces that could be handled on this show."

In January, Sophia Bush, who with OTH co-stars Bethany Joy Lenz and Hilarie Burton on their podcast "Drama Queens" have discussed being victims of sexual harassment behind the scenes of the show, told E! News in January that she and her fellow castmates have started to wonder "what might a feminist reclamation of our show look like?"

    Chances: Close to 100 percent.

    'The Summer I Turned Pretty'

This mega-popular Prime Video series about beautiful teens and their complicated love lives recently wrapped its third season shooting in Wilmington. The show will air in summer of 2025 .

It's believed that this will be the third and final season of "The Summer I Turned Pretty," which is based on a three-book series by "Pretty" showrunner Jenny Han. Han and the show's producers have hinted there may be spinoffs , although whether they'd shoot in the Wilmington area even if greenlit is unknown.

    Chances: More likely than not.

    'The Runarounds'

Show creator and Wilmington resident Jonas Pate has said he doesn't consider this show, which is currently in production in Wilmington , to be a spinoff.

Even so, the actors starring in "The Runarounds" as a pop/rock band trying to make it big appear briefly as a band in season three of another show created by Pate in Netflix hit "Outer Banks," which has shot some scenes locally but is mostly produced in South Carolina.

"The Runarounds" might not technically be a spinoff, but it definitely feels like it was destined for Wilmington, since Pate has said his original plan was to shoot "Outer Banks" here.

An air date has not been announced, but once completed "The Runarounds" will air on Amazon's Prime Video service.

    Chances: 100 percent.
