The latest nominations for the StarNews Student of the Week are in, and now it's time for you to pick the best of the best.

Voting is open until 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3.

Participating high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties nominated students they say have shown outstanding academic achievement and made a difference in their schools and communities.

We will announce a winner Friday, Oct. 4.

To cast a vote, visit the poll at the bottom of this nominees list.

And the nominees for the week of Sept. 30 are:

    Weston Caines, SEA-Tech High School

English teacher Kathryn Nash nominated Weston Caines saying he was the first SEA Tech student to complete the SparkLab capstone project—an achievement that granted him the first high-tech accelerator credit for New Hanover County Schools. “He is self-motivated, reflective, and kind and has a natural ability to elevate those around him,” Nash wrote. “We, at SEA Tech, are incredibly proud of Weston and can't wait to see the great things he accomplishes.”

    Alexis George, Ashley High School

Principal Michael Perez nominated Alexis George, a freshman cross country runner who led the Eagles to the championship of the Adidas XC Meet in Cary, N.C, on Saturday, Sept. 21. “Alexis finished 7th overall, with a time under 20 minutes on a very hilly course,” Perez wrote. “Her top 10 individual finish helped her team earn first place overall.”

Olivia Reme, West Brunswick High School

Teacher Myah Morse nominated Olivia Reme. “Olivia is a great student,” Morse wrote. “She is always ready for instruction, on task, and working hard. I am so proud of her!"
