Former performing arts teacher faces allegations of sexual contact with student
TOMS RIVER — A Neptune City man and former performing arts teacher was arrested on multiple charges of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal sexual contact, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday. Douglas Bollinger, 56, is charged for acts which took place in 2019 in his capacity as a teacher at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School – Performing Arts Academy, located in Toms River.
Mayor, council member preview NRTAC talking points
POINT PLEASANT BEACH — The mayor and a councilman are expected to serve as panelists at this year’s meeting of the borough’s Non-Resident Taxpayers’ Advisory Committee (NRTAC), and this week they gave The Ocean Star a preview of the topics they expect to be fielding the most questions about. “I’ll talk about and address some of the hot topics in town, 5G being one of them; Channel Drive will probably come up as well, along with e-bikes and a few other things,” said Mayor Doug Vitale.
What could a living shoreline do for Lavallette?
LAVALLETTE — Representatives of ReClam the Bay visited the Upper Shores Library on Wednesday evening to discuss what a possible living shoreline could do for the Lavallette community, as well as explain the process at-large. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “A living shoreline is a protected, stabilized coastal edge made of natural materials such as plants, sand, or rock…Natural infrastructure solutions like living shorelines provide wildlife habitat, as well as natural resilience to communities near the waterfront.”
Cub Scouts build models at Boating Museum
POINT PLEASANT BEACH — Point Beach’s Cub Scout Pack 3 stopped by the New Jersey Museum of Boating on Saturday morning, where they took a tour of the facility and built a scale model of a Barnegat Bay rowboat. The Cub Scouts, Tyler, Sam, Kira, Kori and Evelyn, were taught step-by-step how to build the little wooden boats by in-house modeler and Point Beach resident Henry Genthe, according to Boating Museum President Ken Motz.
Rotary club to host 34th annual car show Aug. 20
POINT PLEASANT — The Point Pleasant Boro Rotary Club 34rd annual Car Show, showcasing over 200 antique and classic cars, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at Crystal Point. Antique cars and trucks, modified cars and trucks, foreign, custom, street rods and replicars will fill the lot at Crystal Point Yacht Club, 3900 River Road.
Mayor’s Student Advisory Committee hosting school supply drive
BRICK TOWNSHIP — Mayor Lisa Crate’s Student Advisory Committee is hosting its annual School Supply Drive this month and is seeking donations for children who need the supplies for the upcoming school year. Students of the committee will be collecting new items, including backpacks, lunch bags, folders, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, erasers, glue sticks, scissors, pencil cases and sharpeners, highlighters, dry erase markers, construction paper, notebooks, one-inch binders, earbuds, tissues, hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes.
The Arc, Ocean County Chapter to host casino night fundraiser
BRICK TOWNSHIP — The Arc, Ocean County Chapter is hosting a new fundraising event, Celebrate The Arc Casino Night, which will take place on Friday, Oct. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Atlantis Ballroom at the Days Hotel By Wyndham in Toms River. The Arc, Ocean County Chapter is located in Brick Township and will be hosting the cocktail reception, which will include passed hors d’oeuvres and dinner.
School district prepares for fall opening
POINT PLEASANT — The Point Pleasant Borough School district has offered updates prior to the new school year’s launch, featuring a new swing set at Ocean Road, a STEAM lab at Nellie Bennett and a teen mental health program. As the new school year approaches, on Wednesday, Sept. 4, the Point Pleasant Borough School District is getting ready to welcome students and staff back into the four buildings in the district, Ocean Road and Nellie F.
New road work rules, regulations coming to Bay Head
BAY HEAD — Road work will soon have to meet more meticulous standards in Bay Head under an ordinance introduced by the mayor and borough council, setting more rules and regulations for how roads can be paved and patched. The governing body unanimously introduced an amendment to Chapter 209 of the borough codebook, titled “Streets and Sidewalks.”
Fees to be increased for Bay Head municipal government permits, more
BAY HEAD — Various fees for different permits, licenses and paperwork have been updated in Bay Head. At the borough council meeting on Aug. 5, the council unanimously introduced Ordinance 2024-15, updating Chapter 114 titled “Fees.” Mayor Bill Curtis told The Ocean Star on Wednesday, “We found looking at other towns, even our size, we were way low compared to others.
Roadway elevation project OK’d for three streets in Brick
BRICK TOWNSHIP — The township council approved a resolution for roadway elevation for three streets in the township. The action took place at the Aug. 13 council meeting. Council President Vince Minichino said the streets to be elevated in the project are Normandy Drive, Arrow Court and Broad Avenue. He said the resolution “authorizes the receipt of bids for phase two of the Normandy Beach Roadway Elevation Project.”
‘And at last I see the light…’ at the Glimmer of Hope
BAY HEAD — As the sun glistened on the rippling waters of Twilight Lake, residents of Bay Head gathered along its shores to remember those who they love, and those they have lost. The ninth annual Glimmer of Hope returned to Bay Head over the weekend, offering an “aspiring and memorable night with your own reflective hope, wish or prayer,” said Allison Feehan, president of the Bay Head Business Association, who sponsors this event.
Point Beach draws friends for fantasy football draft
POINT PLEASANT BEACH — For some, fantasy football drafts are a solo mission, with those in the league individually and scientifically making the most methodical picks possible. However, each year, one group of some 20 college buddies makes the trek to Point Pleasant Beach, using the Shore as a backdrop to their draft weekend.
Dredging schedule for Manasquan Inlet updated
POINT PLEASANT BEACH/MANASQUAN — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) shared an updated dredging schedule for the Manasquan Inlet on Friday, Aug. 9, in response to the formation of a shoal on the southeastern opening of the inlet. The large sandbar formed on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the waterway earlier this month, following a series of heavy thunderstorms.
Civil War Encampment portrays daily lives of soldiers
BRICK TOWNSHIP — The Brick Township Historical Society welcomed the 61st New York Volunteer Regiment on Aug. 10 and 11 for its annual Civil War Encampment, portraying what life was like for soldiers during battle. For the past 20 years, regiment reenactors have been visiting the Havens Homestead Museum, at 521 Herbertsville Road, each summer to share a wealth of information with guests about the significance of Brick Township and the homestead property during the Civil War, while also spending two days living just as the soldiers once did.
‘Life, uh, finds a way…’ in Jurassic Bay Head
BAY HEAD — Residents of Bay Head were taken on a journey through time, as the final Mayor’s Walk of the summer featured a prehistoric showcase of the various animals that once called Bay Head their home. The Mayor’s Walks are part of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, co-chaired by Meryl Clement.
Army Corps continues to dredge Manasquan Inlet
POINT PLEASANT BEACH/MANASQUAN — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) continued work this week to dredge the Manasquan Inlet in response to the formation of a shoal on the southeastern opening of the inlet.
