Each morning, students at Martin Luther King Middle School in Richmond, Virginia, begin their day with a lesson in restraint — by handing in their phones. "I'm not worried about the notifications I'm getting and who's texting me or what's going on on social media," 8th grader Jazmine Anderson said.The school began piloting a program last year to lock up cellphones in special pouches made by the company Yondr and store them in a supervised backpack. Two days before Hayfield Secondary School’s season opener against West Springfield High School, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid stood in Hayfield’s auditorium at a fiery community meeting in Alexandria. Flanked by her top legal and communications deputies in the front row, Reid told about 150 parents, staff, and community members that an internal investigation had cleared the school’s new football coach, Darryl Overton, and school district administrators of any wrongdoing regarding allegations of financial impropriety, retaliation, and illegal recruiting of more than 30 football players to the school. The players came from Freedom High School in Prince William County.

Fairfax County prepares to shut down largest homeless encampment
Fairfax County is preparing to clear out one of its largest homeless encampments in a wooded area near the Inova Emergency Room in Reston. The homeless encampment, informally known as “The Hill,” has occupied the area for almost a decade and, in March, was a shelter for around 50 individuals, according to the Fairfax County Office to Prevent and End Homelessness. As of Aug. 27, 13 tents and 17 people lived at the encampment; many former residents now utilize a county-run shelter.
