Starke County Commissioners Hear Update on Safe Haven Baby Box
The Starke County Commissioners heard an update on a Safe Haven Baby Box being installed in the city of Knox. Last summer, California Township Trustee Sheri Bartoli asked the Starke County Commissioners to fund a Safe Haven Baby Box for Starke County. She stated the nearest baby box was located in Plymouth and believed having one in Starke County would be a great asset to the community. Bartoli explained a baby box is something where young mothers as a last resort would give up their babies instead of abandoning them. She stated a baby box is usually placed at hospitals or fire stations where an alarm is triggered, notifying 911 once the box has been closed.
North Judson Man Injured in Accident
A North Judson man was injured in an accident that occurred Tuesday, July 2 just before 9 p.m. CT in the area of Range Road and 500 South. According to the Starke County Sheriff’s Office, it was determined that a 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by 50-year-old Kenneth Ratzlaff, of North Judson, was traveling east on 500 S. when he reportedly failed to stop at the stop sign and pulled into the path of a silver Hyundai Elantra, driven by 22-year-old Elizabeth Krueger, of Knox. The pair collided.
Starke County Republican Caucus Finds New North Judson Town Council Member
A new member has been chosen for the Ward 3 seat left open on the North Judson Town Council by the resignation of James Young at the beginning of June. A Starke County Republican Party Caucus was held Monday, July 1 where three eligible precinct committeemen voted for the next councilman.

North Judson, Hamlet Fire Departments Respond to Structure Fires
Two structure fires were called into the Starke County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center over the weekend. The North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department was called to a fire at 2460 W. State Road 10 in North Judson Saturday, June 29 in the afternoon where firefighters were able to take quick action to knock down the fire. Fire Chief Todd Jackson told WKVI News that there was 65 percent damage to the structure and the fire remains under investigation. The home owner suffered minor injuries, as well as another individual working at the residence. Both were transported from the scene by Starke County EMS.
