UMass vows to 'keep fighting,' visits struggling Mississippi State
Mississippi State will look for significant improvement on defense as it attempts to end a seven-game losing streak when Massachusetts visits Starkville, Miss., for a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs (1-7, 0-5 Southeastern Conference) rank last in the 16-team SEC in both yards allowed per game (477.7) and points allowed per game (36.4). No other team in the conference has allowed an average of more than 23.6 points per contest. The Conversation: Zac Selmon
Mississippi State director of athletics Zac Selmon sat down with Genespage.com for a one-on-one interview about a multitude of topics facing Bulldog athletics. Shortly after Mississippi State director of athletics Zac Selmon finished up a meeting and then a short phone call, he met me in the lobby outside of the office area on the second floor of the Bryan Building. Dressed in black and eager to talk, Selmon extended his hand for a handshake. He smiled as he often does and asked how the new book was doing. The Dude, my seventh book, was released a couple of weeks ago. ‘Progress with no wins is pointless’
Hey, he finally got a chance to bring back a punt! Not just that but make good yards, too, as Kevin Coleman turned the lone Arkansas kickaway into fifteen yards. OK, it wasn't a huge statistical play. It was a change for the better. Because since he began this season with a 117-yard evening running back Eastern Kentucky kicks, opposing squads have focused on taking Mississippi State's ace out of the running (back). Which Coleman kind of expected.
Everything Coach Don Brown said about Mississippi State
UMASS (2-6) will visit Mississippi State (1-7) this weekend. The Bulldogs and Minutemen played a pair of games in 2016 and 2017 with State winning both. It has been a challenging season for both teams. Coach Don Brown is in year three of his second stint as the UMASS head man. Prior to Massachusetts making the jump to the FBS, Brown ran the program from 2004 to 2008. In 2006, Brown was at the helm when the program played for an FCS national title.
