What is on the Penn State to-do list in July? A big NIL event, Big Ten Media Days, and more

Penn State football will finish laying the foundation for the 2024 season while also doing some recruiting over the next 31 days. The Nittany Lions have no time to waste as head coach James Franklin’s 11th season in State College approaches. Before we know it, preseason camp will pass in the blink of an eye during August, and kickoff in Morgantown will be here as the Big Ten team travels to West Virginia to start the year.

We’ll have plenty of time to discuss all of that, of course. For now, let’s review what is on the program’s check list in July.

    Announce the game themes

Yes, it’s true that Penn State has still not accomplished this task. That’s true despite the season being less than two months away. The Lions must first pick the annual White Out game. Then, it can go from there in terms of selecting the Stripe Out opponent, Seats for Servicemembers game, and so on. It doesn’t have to do it immediately. But, it can’t wait too much longer to start making these decisions. As James Franklin said in June, these decisions impact many other parts of the university besides just the football team.

Penn State will soon finish summer workouts

Head strength coach Chuck Losey and his staff are about done putting the players through summer workouts. They’ll wrap up sometime next week and then the team will get some down time before starting preseason camp. The rest and relaxation is badly needed as we’re sure the sore bodies are piling up from weeks of running and lifting in addition to player-organized work by position group.

Head to Indy, and then Avalon

We will find out soon who Franklin picks to take to Big Ten Media Day this year. The annual event is expanding to three days this year since the conference now has 18 teams. Commissions Tony Petiti will kick things off on July 23. Franklin and the three Nittany Lions players will be on stage July 24. And, the event at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium concludes on July 25.

From there, Franklin and many members of the program head to Avalon for Happy Valley United’s Roar at the Shore event. Click here to learn more about that .

    Prep for preseason camp

Penn State has not yet released the day on which it will start preseason camp. But the week where July crosses into August is the safest bet. Whether it begins on July 31 or Aug. 3 is immaterial. What is important, though, is that the Liosn do everything they need this month to be ready to take the field and hit the ground running. Plenty of jobs, both first-team ones and others further down the depth chart, are up for grabs.

Recruit through the dead period, then nail the Lasch Bash

Penn State and schools across the country will spend much of the next two weeks adding more names to the Class of 2025. Once that frenzy dies down, there will be some dead period time to recharge with no visitors allowed on campus until the end of the month. Then, a short window opens for one final chance to host recruits until the fall. The Nittany Lions will look to get big names from the Class of 2026 and beyond in town that day along with numerous commits.
