State College, Pa. — The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts kicked off Wednesday, with artists from across the country showcasing their work to thousands during the weeklong festival

Watercolor paintings, photography, mixed media, and more can be found downtown State College now through Sunday. Chris Lock, owner of Heartless Machine, was one of those artists selling his unique creations at the festival.

Lock sells speakers made from old instruments. The user puts their phone into the dock and music will play through the instrument, which acts like a speaker. Another artist, Morgan Pallas from Lebanon, Pa., is showcasing her talent in watercolor.

“I’ve only been going to art festivals for about a year now.” Pallas said “This is my first year at State College. I had a lot of people telling me I should vendor here. I was so excited when I got a table.”

Pallas was encouraged by her parents to be creative and use art to express herself.

“I’ve always been really into art, but I just started using watercolor in 2020," she said. "It’s taught me a lot and has helped me grow as an artist. Being here makes me feel even more inspired.”

Festivalgoers have plenty of ways to stay cool in the summer heat. Snow cones, water ice, and Happy Valley’s own Berkey Creamery are available to purchase. The festival also features a a splash zone for kids and a water mist tunnel to walk through.

Music lovers can take in performances at three locations this year: Festival Shell on the Old Main lawn, Allen Street Stage, and Sidney Friedman Park Stage. See the full list of shows here .

The Festival of the Arts continues Saturday and runs through Sunday. The Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
