Former Penn State wrestler David Taylor left Happy Valley this spring to become the Oklahoma State wrestling head coach, and will be well compensated for doing so.

Taylor, who was named the Cowboys’ coach on May 7, will receive at least $1 million per year in his new role, with increases over the six-year contract.

His contract, which was obtained by the Centre Daily Times through an open records request, is for six years and will increase by $30,000 each year. He will also receive a one-time $1 million payment “as soon as administratively practical” from Oklahoma State.

Taylor can also increase his income by hitting financial benchmarks. Winning a team national title will earn him $125,000, finishing second will earn him $80,000 and finishing third will earn him $60,000. Taylor will also receive $10,000 per individual champion the Cowboys have each year.

The former Nittany Lion will also have the option to reallocate those incentives to his assistant coaching pool.

He will also receive four tickets to home football games at Oklahoma State, a golf course membership, a luxury suite at home wrestling matches, up to 12 tickets for home wrestling matches and postseason tournaments upon request, moving and temporary housing expenses for up to three months and family travel to away wrestling matches.

Taylor’s buyout is by percentage, with the cost set at 75% of the remaining contract for the first three years and 60% of the remaining contract for the final three years.

The contract was signed by Taylor and Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg on July 16, and university president Kayse Shrum on July 19.

Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson’s contract is not publicly available, although he signed an extension in 2022.
