Penn State extended another scholarship offer to an up-and-coming McDonogh prospect this weekend to linebacker Nick Abrams . Listed at just over 6-foot, 205 pounds, Abrams came into the weekend with interest from many of the region’s top schools, but didn’t pick up his first scholarship offer until after he camped with the Nittany Lion coaching staff.

“To be honest, that was my first time at Penn State. They had been wanting to get me up for a visit and to see me work out for a while, but my schedule didn’t line up,” Abrams said. “But I’m really excited that I could make it and that I was able to get the offer. It was a surreal feeling talking to Coach [James] Franklin and Coach [Tom] Allen . They talked to me about the things they liked about my game and also the things I needed to work on to be a better football player. This also means a lot because of the history between Penn State and my school, McDonogh. There have been many names that have gone there, and for my name to potentially be one of them, that’s a pretty cool feeling.”

Not only did Director of Player Personnel Kenny Sanders graduate from McDonogh, but those ties have led to many impact players over the years. Dvon J-Thomas and Dani Dennis-Sutton will both be impacted players for the Nittany Lions on defense this year. They also had redshirt freshman Mason Robinson and hold a commitment from 2025 wide receiver Jeff Exinor .

“Yeah, those ties do help,” Abrams said when asked if the school’s history impacts how he looks at Penn State. “A lot of [Penn State’s] interest started because of the ties between my coach from McDonogh, Coach [Hakeem] Sule, and Coach Franklin. Coach Franklin coached my coach [at Maryland], so when Coach Sule started telling Penn State about me, it made it easy for them to listen.

“It’s also been awesome having former teammates hit me up like this weekend. Mason told me next time I’m up in Happy Valley to let him know so he can show me around and talk to me about the player side of being at Penn State. Kenny and Jeff were also a big help this weekend, telling me more about the school and how the atmosphere is around campus and during games.”

In addition to camping with the staff, Abrams and his family also attended the Lasch Bash Barbecue earlier in the day. Since this was his first time on campus, Abrams said he learned a lot from the event.

“Lasch Bash was a great event,” Abrams said. “The food was amazing. We split up into teams and played games, which was really cool. It almost felt like a family atmosphere. I got to meet some of the commits and asked them about their process and how they liked the school. Me and my family also got to talk to some of the coaches, but not football talk, just jokes and regular conversations.

“I took my first tour of the facilities, which was crazy. Then, after that, I took a tour through campus and I got to see the school’s buildings, dorms and where the students hang out during the day. My family loved every bit of it, especially my mom, who is a big football fan.”

As a sophomore, Abrams finished with 36 tackles, including two tackles for loss. He added that there are a host of regional programs that will be watching his film closely this fall.

“Penn State was my first [offer], but other schools in the mix are Maryland, Michigan State, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Virginia Tech. Maryland is the most interested out of that bunch. I’ve been down there a couple of times. I’ve been on a few calls with those schools.”
