Mount Airy captures 1A Midwest Regional Golf Championship

STATE ROAD — Mount Airy’s golf team captured the NCHSAA 1A Midwest Regional Championship on May 7.

The Granite Bears won the regional title with a team score of 316 strokes at Cedarbrook Country Club. Mount Airy ran away with the win by topping second-place Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School by 21 strokes and third-place Cornerstone Charter Academy by 28 strokes.

Mount Airy was the only team at the meet to have four top-10 individual finishes. Shockley Hiatt led the team with an 18-hole score of 77 strokes, or 5-over-par. The Granite Bear junior tied for second place among the 60 golfers to compete in the match.

Not far behind Hiatt was Finley Baird tied for fifth with a score of 78 (+6), followed by Brandon Bowman tied for seventh at 79 (+7), Carson Webb in 10th at 82 (+10) and Mason Varney tied for 29th at 91 (+19).

Mount Airy advances to the 1A State Championship Match scheduled for May 13 at 7 Lakes Golf Club.
