Motorcycle operator's arm amputated in wreck
A motorcycle operator’s left arm was amputated in a wreck on Sunset Drive near North Wilkesboro about 6:30 p.m., Sunday, July 14. Brian Dortch, 31, of North Wilkesboro, was eastbound on a Kawasaki when he went off the right side of the road in slight curve just after crossing the Reddies River bridge and was thrown from the motorcycle when it turned over, said Trooper Z.D. West of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

More than 20 drivers took part in a zMAX Cars Tour open test at the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway on Saturday in anticipation of next month’s rescheduled Reverend 100 Pro Late Model and Window World 125 Late Model Stock Car races. The zMAX Cars Tour doubleheader, which was postponed due to weather during the NASCAR All-Star Weekend in May, will bring together many of the best grassroots racers in the country for a one-night showcase of speed on Saturday, Aug. 3.

As children growing up in Galax, Virginia, Lindsey Nale and her sister found their first instruments in their grandparents’ house. “If we were willing to learn, they’d pay for lessons,” she remembers. At six-years old, Nale started an all-girls blue-grass band — and The Loose Strings Band is still going strong. Today, Nale heads up the JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) Program, which serves local students. “It’s so fulfilling to see it sparking the first love of music, which has brought a lot of people into this community who have fallen in love with it,” she says.

Abandoned building fire in Tobaccoville injures 2 firefighters
TOBACCOVILLE, N.C. — An abandoned building caught on fire on Saturday in Tobaccoville, according to the Forsyth County Department of Emergency Services. Just after 1:30 p.m., the Old Richmond Fire Department responded to a residential building fire on River Bluff Farm Road in the Tobaccoville Community of unincorporated Forsyth County.
