USGS, Alleghany County reporting earthquake
SPARTA, N.C. — The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is reporting an earthquakes near Sparta early Saturday morning July 13. The tremor occurred at 5:44 a.m. Saturday about four miles south of Sparta near the Wilkes County border. The 2.2-Magnitude earthquake occurred at an approximate depth of three-point-seven miles. As of 10:00 a.m. Sunday, approximately 40 Alleghany County residents had reported feeling the earthquake to the USGS.

Another earthquake was recorded near Sparta in Alleghany County on Saturday, marking the fourth one in less than a month. This quake measured 2.2 magnitude and was centered 4.1 miles south-southeast of Sparta, 26.9 miles west of Mount Airy, and 36.5 miles east-northeast of Boone at 4:44 am, according to the United States Geological Society.

Jimmy Dean Welborn, 66, of Union Grove, passed away on July 16, 2024, at Iredell Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was born in Iredell County on July 21, 1957, to the late Lawrence Welborn Sr. and Ruby Dishmond Welborn. He worked in lawn care and was a member of Taylor Springs Baptist Church. Two-vehicle crash slows traffic
A two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon at the intersection of North Renfro Street and Independence Boulevard slowed traffic for a time, but appeared to result in no serious injuries. Because accident reports are no longer public record in North Carolina, few details were available. A 2019 Nissan, with a pizza delivery sign mounted on top, collided with a 2012 Isuzu truck, shortly after 1 p.m., according to Mount Airy police. The truck was listed as having $1,000 in damages and still drivable, while the Nissan was listed with $3,000 in damages and not drivable. The driver of the Nissan was transported to Northern Regional Hospital. No other information was available.
