Martha Redbone Roots Project will perform as part of the “Deep Roots, Many Voices” summer outdoor concert series at the Blue Ridge Music Center on July 27. Zoe & Cloyd will open the show in the center’s outdoor amphitheater on the Blue Ridge Parkway just south of Galax.

In a busy last week of regular season swim, Elkin Wet Lightning maintains a perfect record by adding two more W’s to their win column. On Thursday evening, Elkin hosted the Tigersharks of Carroll County. EWL, a much larger team than CC, sailed to an easy victory over the Tigersharks.

KING — West Stokes’ Haley Yates plays softball for the Wildcats and is looking forward to her senior year and being a leader on the field, in the dugout, and where this year will lead the team. Yates helped the Wildcats to a Co-Mid-State Conference Championship and conference tournament championship this past spring. Miller to serve 6 years for manslaughter
HILLSVILLE — Tyrus Miller, 23, of Galax, will serve six years in prison for a fatal shooting, after a sentencing hearing on July 17 in Carroll County Circuit Court. On April 24, after a three-day trial in circuit court, he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and use of a firearm in commission of a felony (first offense) in the shooting death of David Richardson, 33, of Galax, last year.

Concert series brings 2 shows to Mount Airy
The Surry Arts Council Summer Concert Series will showcase two performances this week at the Blackmon Amphitheatre. On Thursday Liquid Pleasure is scheduled to perform in a concert slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening, the Main Event Band will be on the stage for a performance at 7:30. Costs for the concerts are $17, or a concert series summer pass. Those attending the shows are encouraged to take a lounge chair or blanket. Coolers and outside drink are not permitted. Concessions will be on sale. To purchase tickets or a summer pass, call 336-786-7998.

An investigation involving a waitress at a Mount Airy restaurant stabbing a co-worker has led to a ruling that she was acting in self-defense, a police official says. The incident occurred late Sunday afternoon at Thailand Cafe, located on West Independence Boulevard in the Roses shopping center.
